SUSTAINABILITY and responsible mining are under the spotlight at a media training workshop in Kadoma today, which also seeks to enhance journalists’ understanding of current mining trends.

The training organised by the Zimbabwe Environmental Lawyers Association will emphasise the evolving landscape of journalism, where social media has become an important tool alongside traditional mass media. By building the capacity of journalists, this initiative aligns with Vision 2030, which aims for a sustainable mining sector that is ethically inclusive and socially responsible.

“The programme seeks to connect the mining industry, local communities, and media professionals, fostering a balanced narrative around mining activities. Furthermore, by gathering journalists’ perspectives on mining reportage and their insights into leveraging social media for accountability, the initiative aims to gather data that will inform future programming.

“This will enhance the media’s ability to fulfil its normative roles of monitoring, collaboration, facilitation, and advocacy in promoting responsible practices in the mining industry. Overall, by equipping journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills, this initiative aspires to contribute to a more sustainable and responsible mining sector,” ZELA said.

Presenting on media’s role in promoting sustainable mining, Harare Polytechnic media lecturer Mr Ishmael Tagurenyika said it is crucial for the media to also focus on mining firms financial reports. He said the reports are embedded with key details that pertain to sustainable mining.

“As the media, it is crucial to collaborate with government, experts and mining firms in reporting as that will enhance the quality of articles for the betterment of the sector

“The media should thoroughly examine finances to detect possible tax evasion by some firms.

“Also the media should also pay attention to data-driven journalism to enhance reporting. By having partnerships’ journalists will be equipped with interpreting financials of mining firms,” said Mr Tagurenyika.

Mr Tagurenyika said that will be possible through capacity-building workshops for the media.

He added that consistent reporting is a key factor as that will measure the impact of reporting and keep a check on mining firms’ sustainable mining

Journalists have also been urged to familiarise themselves with various statutes governing mining, mining laws and current trends in the sector.
