Sweswe: Good to be back in PSL

Curtworth Masango

NEWLY appointed Bulawayo Chiefs coach, Lizwe Sweswe, said it’s good to be back in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

The gaffer led FC Platinum to the league title in 2019 after taking over the reins from Norman Mapeza, who had left to join South African top-flight side Chippa United.

Sweswe joins Chiefs from ZIFA Southern Region Division One side Talen Vision. He previously coached the now defunct Tsholotsho FC.

“It’s good to be back in the PSL. It gives me a chance to express myself football wisdom at the highest level in the country as a coach. One thing for sure about this job; just like a barometer, it comes with a lot of pressure.

“The club and fans will be looking for results. It is the job of the coach to bring results and in this particular caser, I am the one mandated to deliver.

“I am aware of the challenges and the club’s status. It’s an ambitious club that wants to go far and make a name for itself.

“But it is up to everyone at the club, from the executive, the technical and the administration to steer the ship in the right direction. I am optimistic that with all departments and individuals playing their part, it will be easy to make the club’s goals come to fruition.”

Sweswe said he will assess the team first before looking for players to bolster his squad ahead of the new season.

“I can’t tell if I am going to sign new faces because I have to assess the squad first. A number of players departed, but you also have to understand the squad has a working developmental side. So, maybe we have to promote guys from our development, but I am yet to decide.

“One thing that cannot be ignored is the working environment that surrounds the whole team. It might have a bearing on how we fare, but as a coach who has accepted the job, it means I am ready to work under those conditions and I will be looking to excel,” he said.
