MATABELELAND Amateur Swimming Board (MASB) will host the 2018 Provincial Swimming Championships at the Bulawayo City Pool on Thursday.
Up-and-coming swimmers from Bulawayo clubs, which include Stingrays Swimming Academy, Petra Swimming Academy, Zambesi Tigers, Barracudas, Falcon, Crusaders, School of Swimming, Dolphins and Penguins will face off in various categories.
MASB secretary Nokuthula Cyprianos said the tournament will be used to select a team that will represent Matabeleland in the national championships to be held in Harare from January 2-6.
“We expect tough competitions because all swimmers want to earn places in the provincial team that will compete in Harare next year. The fact that there will be prizes and medals for best performing teams as well as individual honours will push every swimmer to do their best,” said Cyprianos.
Having come second in last year’s national championships, Matabeleland province will be hoping to assemble a much stronger team to compete for the top spot.
Last year’s national competition was won by Mashonaland, who dominated both the boys’ and girls’ swimming events to amass a whooping 2 957 points, with hosts Matabeleland coming second with 2 074 points, while Mashonaland Country Districts were third with 190 points.
The tournament saw swimmers from Matabeleland, Harare, Mashonaland, Midlands and Manicaland and Mashonaland Country Districts showing their aquatic prowess in various age group competitions.
