Swimming expedition ends in tragedy for Gweru teenagers

A SWIMMING expedition by a group of boys from Gweru’s Mkoba suburb ended in tragedy at the weekend when two of them drowned while trying to rescue each other after one of them got stuck in the mud, police confirmed.
Police yesterday said the bodies of the deceased teenagers, Tinotenda Mukwananzi, 12 and his friend Tanaka Mbangura, 13 were retrieved on Saturday afternoon after a report of drowning was made at Nehanda Police Station in Mkoba suburb.

A close relative, Adwell Mbangura said: “On Saturday morning, the two deceased boys went for a swimming expedition in the company of three other boys from Mkoba Village 16 in Ngamo area on the outskirts of Gweru. While they were swimming in a small dam which is about seven metres deep, Tinotenda got stuck in the mud and shouted for help.”

Mbangura said Tanaka, a close friend to Tinotenda tried to reach Tinotenda but was also trapped in the mud as he tried to rescue him.
“Three other boys got out of the dam and rushed to Nehanda Police Station where they made a report. We then visited the scene in the company of some police officers and managed to retrieve the boys’ bodies,” he said.
Midlands police spokesperson, inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.
