Syrian opposition holds crisis meeting

Damascus to discuss the recent turmoil in the country.
The one-day meeting, called for and financed by independent dissidents in Syria, aims to find a suitable outlet from the intractable impasse. The meeting started by Syrian national anthem and the participants observed a minute of silence for those who were killed in the country since the start of the protests three months ago.
Louay Hussein, a dissident, said in an opening speech that “those participants are not terrorists or gunmen . . . they didn’t have previously-delineated agenda other than what they have repeatedly said about a tyrant regime controlling the country and it should perish and establish instead a civil and democratic state” that respect human rights and achieve justice and equality without discrimination.
He added that the meeting “doesn’t aim to defend ourselves before the authorities that have labeled us with the ugliest charges . . . we are meeting today in an attempt to define the causes that hinder our transition to a democratic and civil state and to put forward a vision about how to end tyranny and ensure a peaceful and secure transition to the hoped-for state, the state of freedom, democracy and equality.” – Xinhua.
