UNSEEDED Zimbabwe tennis player Tadiwa Chinamo caused a major upset when he beat sixth seed Aditya Gokhale from India 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6) in the third round of the ITF tournament underway at Harare Sports Club. Chinamo, who is based in France, has a battle on his hands in the third round were he is going to meet fourth seed Akram El Sallsly of Egypt.
Zimbabwe’s leading player at the tourney, Courtney Lock, also booked his place in the next round after dismissing Brandon Levendale 6-1, 6-2. Lock will now take on Ahmed Herress who defeated Omar Elkadi of Egypt 6-0, 6-2.
Lock said he is confident he is going to do well in the remaining matches.
“I really enjoyed my first match and it was good to win, it was not easy but I did it, I am now looking forward to playing my next match and just hoping to do even better,” said Lock.
The other trio who have qualified to the third round of the Grade Four ITF tourney are Mark Chigaazira, Alwyn Mushonga and Luca Picci.
In the girls section Zimbabwe has three players who made it through to the third round.
Nicole Dzenga had a bye yesterday but she is expected to take on Oleksandra Andrieieva of Ukraine, who beat Kimberly Bhunu 6-0, 6-3, today. Keren Muswere upset Tanyaradzwa Magunje 6-1, 6-0.
Rudo Mahachi is another player who has made it to the third round after a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Chengetobwe Moyana.
