Takashinga mourns Chirandu

TAKASHINGA Cricket Club have lost one of their longest-serving employees Maraini Tichavangana who died yesterday in Harare after serving the club for 25 years as a groundsman.Tichivangana, popularly known as Chirandu, was a well-known figure in cricket circles for his commitment to detail and dedication to duty at Takashinga.
He was 85-years-old at the time of his death.
Tichivangana was credited for transforming the ground throughout the years.

The workaholic groundsman was part of the history when the recently-refurbished Takashinga Cricket Club hosted its first international matches during the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in June this year.

“We are sad to announce the passing away of our first groundsman Tichavangana Maraini popularly known as Chirandu.
“He was a faithful and humble servant of the beautiful game of cricket we all love, he served Takashinga Cricket Club for 25 years until the time of his death,” said the club in a statement.

The Gutu-born groundsman, who also doubled up as caretaker, worked at the club from November 11, 1998, until the time of his death.

Most of the national team players like former captains Tatenda Taibu, Hamilton Masakadza, Prosper Utseya and Chamu Chibhabha all passed through the Highfield facility.
