THE countdown to the historic boxing bout, in which Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire, is scheduled to defend her World Boxing Council (WBC) interim super bantamweight title, has begun.
She will fight Zulina Munoz of Mexico.
The bout is scheduled for October 1 in Harare.
The super bantamweight is a weight class of 54kgs to 55kgs. Take Money is currently weighing 57kgs.
The fight was previously postponed twice, due to financial constraints.
But, promoters, Delta Force, have engaged the Government to host a fund-raising dinner for the fight.
Chiwandire is set to go into camp this week.
Delta Force director, Clyde Musonda, said they were looking forward to the big day.
“Preparations are going well so far. Our boxer is ready for the showdown.
“It’s only that we are yet to meet our budget and I hope that area will be covered this week.
“Kuda is physically and mentally fit. “She only needs to shed two kgs.
“This is going to be a prestigious boxing event that will show that ‘Zimbabwe is open for business’,” he said.
Chiwandire spent some time in South Africa preparing for the fight.
“Training in South Africa was very crucial because they have better boxing facilities.
“It was also important for Kuda as she sparred with other female boxers in the ring since she last fought in February, against Catherine Phiri.
“Our major challenges are funds. “We still need support from everyone to host a successful and historical event that will be broadcast around the world.”
He said Chiwandire is representing the African continent as the only female boxer holding a WBC belt.
