‘Take up empowerment opportunities’

THE Young Women Economic Development initiative has urged youths from mixed race communities stay away from illicit drugs and take advantage of the abundant empowerment opportunities which are available in the economy.

Speaking during a meeting with the local community in Arcadia, Harare, yesterday, the chairperson of the group and Zanu-PF Mashonaland East legislator (proportional representation), Cde Tatenda Mavetera, urged young women from the mixed race community to stake their claim in the economy.

“Young Women ED is not about disability, not about political affiliation and it’s all about the inclusion of young women,” she said.

“We are for ED and very happy that First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa has challenged us to be all-inclusive.

“Every young woman below the age of 45 has a role to play in this new economic dispensation.”

Cde Mavetera said young women should be involved in shaping the economic development of the country.

“We want everyone to be involved in programmes that empower young women.

“When the President talks about economic empowerment, his focus is on economic development and not politics.

“We aim to involve every young woman in economic development, which is why we are holding such forums to complement Governments efforts.

“We heard that young women in Arcadia are also involved in drug abuse and prostitution in order to get rid of stress. We intend to keep engaging them in a holistic manner in order to help them find solutions.”

She said the Young Women ED initiative will help women from mixed race communities to access land and loans from banks.

“It is very important for us to engage young women from mixed race communities so that they do not feel marginalised and left out of the country’s economic activities.

“So we are here to make sure that they get involved and have access to empowerment opportunities.”

Empower Bank Harare manager Ms Ebony Chipfumbu urged youths from the community to apply for loans.
