. .
Believe me when I say the border town of Plumtree is vibrant on the entertainment scene.
I was there this past weekend as Chicken King played host to an event organised by the ever growing Toundtainment Events. The events company is headed by Handsome Sibanda popularly known as Handy.
He is pulling out all stops when it comes to putting Plumtree on the arts map.
The town has seen a number of stars make their way there. Talk about the likes of Ronnie Nyakale (Cosmo) and Manaka Ranaka (Lucy) both from SABC 1’s Generations: The Legacy, the list is long but there’s one particular actor who has fallen in love with the place.
He’s popularly known as GP MaOrange — a name he earned for his role in South Africa’s crime movie of the early 2000s Gaz’lam’.
Israel Matseke Zulu is a blessing to be around. He has starred in a lot of series in South Africa including my favourite Yizo Yizo.
He was in Plumtree to shoot a music video with Tsibi and RS for a track called Faka Lento which he did with the Plumtree boys.
You should see him dance or interact with his fans. He is as humble as they come. I even overheard a fan say: “Lucy should learn a thing or two from him, you see how he’s taking pictures and smiling at fans? U-Lucy wayengakudla ngempama for asking (she would have slapped you for asking).”
Plumtree also has another blessing in 2018 Bulawayo Arts Awards nominee Dj Yugoe who will take Plumtree music to the world.
Word on the street is that he has a UK and Dubai tour lined up. I liked how he played local Plumtree music and people sang along and danced.
They are now familiar with it. I was also amazed by Que and Mabae who have copied Revolution and Djembe Monks but are working on their own style.
Their act is really interesting and can stand its own in any arts sphere.
Big up to Handy and his team for bringing good art to Plumtree.
The Donate A Pad movement is meant to raise awareness on challenges faced by the rural or disadvantaged girls and it was a resounding success.
It was also nice to see fellow creatives like Babongile Sikhonjwa and TKP Ndlunkulu supporting Plumtree.
Until next week, be safe . . . @nkuenkala 0772214373
