LONG distance runners from around the country and region are set to battle for top honours this weekend in Mutare at one of the nation’s most prestigious races, the annual 21km Tanganda half marathon.
A total of over 1 000 athletes from around the world are expected to grace this year’s edition of the race which will be staged on Sunday and will also serve as the qualifier for other wolrd events.
This year runners will battle in the 21km race, 10km race and 5km fun run, with the winner of the main race 21km qualifying for a half marathon set for United States of America in September.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) president – Tendai Tagara – said they are looking forward to one of the country’s prestigious races which will crown the country’s representative.
“We are looking forward to the Tanganda half marathon which will be staged this weekend in Mutare.
“The Tanganda half marathon is one of our most prestigious races and the winner of the main race will represent the country at the world half marathon that will be staged in the USA in September,” he said.
Organizers of the race, Tanganda Tea Company said they are committed to the race and are very happy with growth the race over the past few years.
“We are committed to this race and we are very happy with how it has grown over the past years.
“We are looking forward to another successful race this Sunday and we wish all the athletes the best come race day,” said Tanganda Tea Company operations manager, Farai Garayi.
Defending champions – Moses Tarakinyu – and Ethel Pangiso are expected to defend their crowns in the men’s and women’s 21km race this Sunday.
