Tapfuma into third round in ITF tourney

Tapfuma, who had a bye in the first round, overpowered Fouad 6-2, 6-3 to progress to the last 16 in the boys’ category.
Only four players from Zimbabwe in the boys’ section managed to progress to the last 16.
Seventh seed Courtney Lock, Ronzai Saurombe and Johannes Artzinger will join Tapfuma in today’s matches.
Lock beat Bjorn Scheepbouwer 6-3, 6-1 to proceed to the third round.
Lock said he is looking forward to his match today when he takes on Ismael Mzai of Kenya.
“The first match was tough, I was trying to look for some confidence. I was feeling positive but it was tight. But I felt good, it was a good starting match and a good base.
“I have a tough match tomorrow (today) but I am feeling good at home and have the home advantage. I think I will do my best, if I win it will be great,” said Lock.
Saurombe, who is seeded eighth, outclassed Thomas Greeff of South Africa 6-1, 6-0 while Artzinger also progressed to third round after his opponent Benmo Oparison of Nigeria retired in the first set.
Artzinger was leading 4-1.
Saurombe was a happy man after he got off with an easy match yesterday.
He has a date with Joshua Luck who overpowered Botswana’s Innocent Tidimane 6-1, 6-1.
“It was quite an easy match. I had a good day today and I am hoping to play well tomorrow.
“I am playing Luck (Joshua) and I have played against him before, like three years ago and I won but he has improved.
“I just want to play my best, be aggressive and try to dominate most of the points,” said Saurombe.
Top seed Mathew Rossouw from South Africa dismissed Zimbabwe’s Jotham Majaha 6-2, 6-1 while third seed Guy Orly Iradukunda defeated Joshua Chetty 6-3, 6-3. The girls had a break yesterday as they were ahead of the boys’ competition since they had a draw of 32 compared to a draw of 64 for the boys.
They will return to the court today with only two Zimbabwean players, Thabile Tshatedi and Latifah Yasini, competing in the third round.
Tshatedi said she was hoping to continue with her winning ways today when she takes on Janet Koch of South Africa. We all had tough matches and unfortunately only the two of us managed to pull through.
“Both us have tough matches ahead but I hope I will pull through again,” said Tshatedi.
