TAFADZWA SHAMBA and Tapiwa Makore Senior, who killed Tapiwa Makore Junior (7) in cold blood in September 2020, received a one-life imprisonment sentence when they appeared before Justice Gibson Mandaza for their resentencing last week.
The pair was convicted in July 2023 and was among other death row inmates who were referred back to court for resentencing following the abolition of the death penalty last year.
They were among a batch of 39 inmates whose cases were set down for resentencing in the first term of the High Court.
The remaining cases will be completed tomorrow.
Among the pending cases is that of Charles Kavhumbura, who strangled his then-seven-year-old daughter and went on to dump her body in a nearby pond in a desperate attempt to evade paying US$30 in maintenance fees for her upkeep on October 14, 2017.
The girl and her brother had visited him at his grinding mill at Susman Farm in Juru, Murehwa, after being sent by their mother, Pedzisai Kachepa, to collect money for their upkeep.
Kavhumbura, by then, had moved on and married another woman following his divorce from Kachepa.
In his bid to evade the burden of paying money for the upkeep of his daughter, he then strangled her and went to dump her body in a nearby pond, approximately 750 metres away from the mill.
