ACOUSTIC guitarist, Tariro neGitare, says she was inspired by yesteryear greats to venture into music.
In her early teens, she was already playing a guitar, imitating her icons.
“Music has always been a part of my life in one way or another.
“I started playing the guitar at age 13.
“I was influenced by a lot of people growing up, I listened to a lot of local musicians like Oliver Mtukudzi, Ilanga, Bundu Boys, and international acts.
“I listened to Tracy Chapman and Lauryn Hill.
“Nowadays, my music taste is very varied.
“I will listen to anything that sounds good with a great message of hope.”
She hailed God for blessing her talent.
“I am inspired by God, life, and everything around me.
“I don’t think I have had a difficult song to write because a lot of it is inspired.
“So, I’m literally just receiving the music and passing it on to the audience.”
Tariro has shared the stage with the late Tuku, Mbuya Stella Chiweshe (late), Jah Prayzah and Victor Kunonga, among others.
Speaking about her biggest music highlight, she said it was when she had a tour in Germany in 2013.
She has also collaborated with German bands Favo and Jamaram.
“Every performance is special but I think my highlight would have been my inaugural Germany tour with the band Jamaram, which literally changed my life and opened up my eyes to possibilities within the music value chain,” she said.
“I think the most difficult thing about being an artist is seeing what’s possible and waking up to what is.
“We have the blessing and the curse of tapping into the supernatural and that, in itself, comes with its challenges,” she said.
Tariro is one of the consistent female artists in Zimbabwe.
