Tasunungurwa Mupambwa is one such person who is looking into fully exploiting his talent as an artist. His special talent is that he is able to draw almost anything he sets his eyes on. How did it all start? The youngster told Cool Lifestyle that he has been a brilliant artist for as long as he can remember.
“I never attended any art class besides the basic art in Grade One. I have been great at drawing for as long as I can remember. I used to draw cartoons from books like ‘Nhaka Yeupenyu’ among other comics,” said Tasunungurwa.
Tasunungurwa revealed that people have been amazed by his ability. To him it was just a hobby because drawing came to him easily. He would actually be puzzled when classmates drooled over his work.
“It was when I drew my favourite football player, Zinedine Zidane, when I was in Grade 5 that I realised that I had a special ability. It was my first time to draw an actual person but I still did not think of taking it seriously,” he said.
In a way it was a pity for Tasunungurwa because, while in high school, he did not have the chance to showcase his drawing prowess because woodwork was the only subject that required a bit of drawing.
As a student at Seke 3 High School and later Herentals College where he finished his A-Levels last year he would gladly draw images of his friends for the fun of it.
“I had requests from people to draw them and surprisingly I would do so very well with an ordinary pencil and an ordinary piece of paper,” he said.
Tasunungurwa has compiled a portfolio which contains some of his finest work so far. His collection includes the drawing of his spiritual parents Prophet and Prophetess Makandiwa, famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, reggae icon Capleton, United states-based Akon among other celebrities.
“I look at an image and once it sticks into my head I start making sketches and in a few hours I will be done with the whole drawing. Over the last few years I have mastered a few tricks in the trade and my art has become better.”
The artist also spoke of plans of eventually getting into art school in an effort to find out what is there to learn about art.
“Last year I finished my A-Levels where I was doing commercials. I intend to go to art school later on as I am curious to know more about art. All along drawing has been an inborn thing for me. People love my work but I would like to set foot in a school of art to find out what other artists are taught,” he said.
He revealled some of his plans of showcasing his work at platforms such as the National Gallery. Thanks to encouragement from his friends Keith Chirwadza and Carlos Marwere, he is planning to use his expertise to start his own company that designs logos too.
“There is not much competition in my field and the resources needed when drawing are easily accessible. I am enthusiastic about my future in drawing and I will do whatever it takes to make it a success,” he said
Tasunungurwa, however, bemoaned the locals’ lack of interest in art which is different from people from overseas.
He said it was discouraging at times but in a way it is blessing to him because it will take his work to foreign lands. The lad took the time to advise other teens to exploit their talents for the betterment of their future. He stressed that in these days we are living in one does not need to be a divergent thinker but should keep their minds open to other aspects that may uplift them.
“People like David Beckham, Oliver Mtukudzi and the Brad Pitts of this world have had successful careers in their lifetime. We can’t all be doctors and lawyers but the world needs painters, entertainers and architects. A person needs to be serious and develop his skills,” he said.
