“There were a lot of factors which the players did not allow to deter their zeal to win matches on the field of play. All those factors were off field and it was so important for the players to ensure they remain top using matches.
“I will describe the problems that have bedevilled our game as unhealthy for a league in its infancy and I urge administrators to exercise credence in running affairs and questions are bound to be asked as to why some people left problems that late.
“I still believe there was an attempt to derail the players’ focus from the field to off field drama,” said Gumbo.
Should Hardbody be confirmed winners, this will be Gumbo’s first title win in his playing and coaching career spanning over two decades which has taken him from the now defunct Shu Shine to Hwange as a player, from Hwange to Gaths Mine, Shabanie Mine, Masvingo and to Botswana.
His stint at Gaths Mine in 2004 came closest to finishing second in the Eastern Region Division One and throughout Gumbo clearly displayed the anticipation to seal the championship on the table.
“It will be good for my career and my curriculum vitae to endorse such a title and it will boost the players’ confidence. For the city of Gweru that has gone for four years without Premier
Soccer League action it will be a timely boost.
“I urge the players to exercise patience, the supporters not to lose hope and the sponsors to continue supporting the players’ cause. If fate has it that Hardbody will be promoted no one has the powers to change fate.
“If not our year we still cannot change that fate but credibility in the whole exercise to determine the winners is of utmost importance. It is so painful for players and coaches who would have put their effort on the field of play only to lose it in the administration corridors,” said Gumbo.
Gumbo said he would go ahead scouting for players for next season and such preparations would see Hardbody travelling to FC Platinum for a friendly match at the weekend.
