Tsenulo Moyo

A pirate taxi driver in Bulawayo has appeared in court facing charges of stealing R64 000 from a shop in the city centre.

Nhlanhla Moyo (45) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Challenge Mahembe facing theft charges. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to 29 August for judgment.

In his defence, he said, “I do not know about the alleged offence. I was called by a police officer from Bulawayo Central Police Station saying I should come to the station. I don’t even know or have ever driven the vehicle which is alleged to have been driven that day as a getaway after the offence,” he said.

Two State witnesses testified they saw the accused and his friend carrying an empty yellow paper bag and coming out of the shop with it loaded. They said the accused hurriedly left the place and got into a Honda Fit.

The court heard that on 25 October 2023, at around 10am, the accused was seen carrying an empty yellow paper bag and entering a shop situated along Fifth Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Bulawayo.

The accused is said to have come out with it loaded and left hurriedly using a Honda Fit. The matter came to light when the complainant, Thulani Magagula, checked his CCTV footage and saw the accused allegedly stealing the money.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused.
