industry as a whole but for Sean Mubayiwa better known as Sean 1, it is the worst thing that ever happened to him.
A prolific music producer, TBA died together with his girlfriend Theresa in a car crash on his way home from his double album launch with newcomer to the Chigutiro team – Sean 1 – on October 29.
That fateful night, Sean 1 and TBA – who is also known in the music circles as Playboy – were launching their debut albums titled “Wakandirwadzisa” and “Uchandifunga” respectively. Both albums marked the first time for both Sean 1 and TBA on the microphone and TBA did a tremendous job singing on two of Sean 1’s songs he featured “Tirimurudo” and “Wakandirwadzisa”.
“We spent the whole day trying to finish mastering some of the performance versions of the songs on my album. At one point, I even considered postponing the launch but Sipho said ‘Dont be afraid baba, we got this,” said a wistful Sean 1.
“Had the show been postponed TBA would not have been in that accident and he and Theresa (his girlfriend) may still have been alive.”
The double launch which also featured fellow Chigutiro artistes in the form of Nox, Trinta and Blush was held at Chez Intemba in Pretoria was a success as hundreds of Zimbabweans filled the club and danced to the music until the wee hours of October 30.
TBA, clad in a T-shirt with an inscription “Do You Know Who I AM” together with Sean 1 played a pivotal role in managing the event until it was over.
When the show was over, Sean 1 remained behind at the venue to wait for the car which was taking TBA and his girlfriend and two other colleagues to return for him and his two friends – Tafadzwa and Tatenda.
“The last thing he said to me just before the car left was ‘Ndokuona kustudio kuma2′ (I’ll see you at the studio at 2pm),” added Sean 1.
Sean 1 then received a phone call 30 minutes later with news of the accident and immediately took a cab to the scene. He says he couldn’t believe what he saw as the people he had been with barely an hour before were seriously injured.
Theresa passed away on the spot and Sipho was rushed to hospital.
“It was so painful to see my best friend and mentor with all those drips lying comatose in hospital,” said the new Chigutiro artiste.
“If it was not for him, I wouldn’t have been in the music industry.
“He encouraged me whenever I fell short of confidence. He was a good man and if God could grant me one wish right now, I would ask him to bring back Sipho.”
TBA was officially pronounced dead at 1745 hours after spending close to 12 hours in the Intensive Care Unit.
Sean 1’s 7-Track debut album was wholly produced by TBA and features renowned artistes based in South Africa like Trinta, Nox and Blush.
TBA with his creative mastery of music production is responsible for the rise of several celebrated urban grooves artistes and would have undoubtedly brought Sean 1 to stardom.
“Now I am left to face this journey alone and I will honour of my good friend and partner, The Legend; TBA,” concluded Sean 1.
Together with Take 5 at the dawn of the millennium, TBA founded the That Squad Studios where they did a couple of award-winning productions such as the Chamhembe compilations.
Songs that gave a face to urban grooves as an upcoming genre (then) like “Suzzana” by Roki, “Zvachose” by Kevie and “Waenda” by Tererai were all produced by TBA and Take 5.
TBA then moved from That Squad (Chamhembe) to start his own Chigutiro stable where he produced several compilation and solo albums of renowned urban grooves artistes like Ngoni Kambarami, Maskiri, Shayne Dings, 2BG, Nox and Honey Vibes, among several others.
