MANCHESTER UNITED have enquired about Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
SunSport revealed last month that Jose Mourinho does not want to sell the France midfielder but that has not deterred United from making contact with Madrid.
Tchouameni, 26, has just started his mandatory three-week break after France reached the World Cup semi-finals.
United shortlisted Tchouameni as a possible target as he falls into their preferred age range of 22 to 26. Tchouameni is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2028.
Reports suggest he has agreed a new contract to 2031 but Madrid have not yet announced anything.
Crucallly, Tchouameni is a specialist defensive midfielder, unlike recent arrivals Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
United want an outright defensive midfielder to replace Casemiro, who was released.
Ironically, Madrid replaced Casemiro when he left for United in 2022 with Tchouameni.
United were offered the chance to sign Tchouameni in 2021 but did not have the budget for a midfielder.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United’s manager at the time, was keen on recruiting a young No6, with Declan Rice the favoured target.
The Red Devils began their pre-season programme by losing 1-0 to Wrexham in Helsinki last Saturday.
