A GWERU teacher committed suicide by hanging herself following a heated dispute with her Botswana-based husband who accused her of having an affair. The fateful incident occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday last week when Cathrine Kandenga of Mkoba 13 and a teacher at Mambo Primary School committed suicide by hanging herself on a tree at her home after a telephone conversation with her husband who is believed to be based in Botswana.

It is understood that the husband, whose name was not given, accused the now deceased Kandenga of sleeping around while he was in Botswana.

A relative who declined to be named said following the conversation Kandenga threatened to commit suicide and told her husband that she was taking her life before leaving a suicide note alleging that the husband had accused her of infidelity.

“When Kandenga told her husband that she wanted to take her life her husband phoned his brother to check on his wife at around 4am.When the brother got home he found Kandenga hanging from a tree in the yard a few metres from the house,” said the relative.

A neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity said Kandenga and her husband had a long standing dispute and he had trust issues.

“Kandenga graduated from Midlands State University recently and was now teaching at Mambo Primary School. Her husband Baba Sean is based in Botswana. Baba Sean accused Kandenga of seeing other men behind his back. On Wednesday around 4am Kandenga committed suicide leaving a suicide note stating the reason she had committed suicide,” said the neighbour.

Kandenga’s body was taken by police to Gweru Provincial Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.  Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende could neither deny nor confirm the incident.

“There is no electricity at Mkoba Police Station at the moment. We are still waiting for communication from them pertaining to the issue because they are the responsible station. We will furnish you with any details regarding the matter,” she said.
