A TEACHER at Odzi Primary School and his two friends were fined $700 each by the court after they teamed up with close to 100 villagers and attacked mine workers at Odzi 12 Mine destroying equipment worth $20 000.
The teacher, Wilford Zulu (34), and brothers, Jacob (25) and Jefta Ticharwa (28), had been sentenced to three years in jail, but Mutare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe removed one year of the sentence on condition they paid the fine by today.
He also set aside the remaining 24 months on condition that the trio reinstituted the mineworkers of $10 000 on or before December 29. State counsel Mr Fletcher Karombe said on August 17 at around 1pm, the trio ganged up with about 100 villagers and hatched a plan to attack workers. The other 100 people are still at large. Mr Karombe said the gang armed themselves with logs, iron bars, machetes and catapults and went to Odzi 12 Mine where they unleashed terror on the miners. Mineworkers reported the matter leading to Zulu and the Ticharwa’s brothers’ arrest.
