TEAM Zimbabwe is scheduled to go into camp on Saturday at Northlea High School in Bulawayo to prepare for the Confederation of School Sports Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) ball games. The annual ball games will be held in Bulawayo from August 27-29 at different venues around the city.Zimbabwe will be joined in the games by teams from Botswana Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland. Zambia has still not decided whether or not to send a team.
Northlea High will also serve as a training base for some of Team Zimbabwe’s events and chef de mission Cynthia Khumalo said they have set the deadline for all selected individuals to confirm their availability.
Khumalo, who is also president of the National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph), said although preparations are on course, they were still working towards securing training facilities closer to Northlea High.
“Preparations for the games are in progress. We’re working on securing training facilities that are closer to our camping venue and Baines (Junior School) is our primary target,” said Khumalo.
She also revealed that they had not yet secured facilities for volleyball and basketball for the actual games, but said the organisers were confident of finding suitable venues before the beginning of the tournament.
Football will be held at the grounds outside Barbourfields Stadium and netball at White City.
Teams to represent Zimbabwe were chosen during the national games that took place during the last few months. Zimbabwe won the boys’ Under-17 basketball and Under-14 boys’ soccer tournaments in Zambia last year.
Teams will participate in the Under-14 and Under 17 age groups, except for basketball which is only for the Under-17s.
