Team Zim win SARPCCO Games

ZIMBABWE has for the third time in a roll, won the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisations Games.
Team Zimbabwe won the last two editions of the Games in Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2009 and 2011 and the 2013 games saw Zimbabwe taking the crown home again.

This year’s edition was being held under the theme, “Combating Crime, United in Sport.”
ZRP were battling it out with 12 other Sadc police teams in seven sporting events — athletics, darts, chess, football (men and women), netball, volleyball (men and women) and tennis.

Zimbabwe won 17 gold medals, 27 silver and 16 bronze and accumulated 182 points. Zimbabwe were presented with the trophies and medals during a colourful ceremony held at the Independence Stadium.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioner General Levie Sibanda and Zimbabwe Ambassador to Namibia, Chipo Zindoga, and senior Namibian Government officials.

Head of the Team Zimbabwe, Mekia Tanyanyiwa, said it was a tough competition.
“It was a very tough assignment because the level of competition was higher than expected. We performed very well in all disciplines,” he said.

Zindoga hailed Namibia for successfully hosting the Games.
“The Games are a unifying factor in the Sadc police forces. We witnessed the spirit of oneness. Commissioner-General (Augustine) Chihuri’s boys and girls have made the nation very proud,” she said.

Mbada Diamonds, who sponsored the team with tracksuits, T-shirts, caps and satchels, promised to give US$200 to each athlete who wins a gold medal.
