A 17-year-old girl from Nyanga died after allegedly being severely assaulted by her father and stepmother for not sleeping at home, police have confirmed.

In a statement posted on their official social media platforms, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said they have arrested Chakupiwa Kamupira (48) and Maria Chibego (38) in connection with the teenager’s death, which occurred on 14 July 2025 at Chimusasa Business Centre in Nyanga.

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Chakupiwa Kamupira (48) and Maria Chibego (38) in connection with a case of murder… The victim, Rumbidzai Kamupira (17), died upon admission at a local clinic after being assaulted by the suspects,” reads the statement.

Police said the incident was triggered after the teenager failed to return home on the night of 13 July.

The stepmother, Chibego, allegedly assaulted her using open hands and a switch, before her father joined in using the same method. The minor collapsed and was taken to a local clinic where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigations are ongoing.
