A 19-YEAR-OLD man who ran wild and beat his workmate with a pick handle in a brawl over a cellphone memory card has been fined $100 or 30 days imprisonment.
Takudzwa Shoko of Mariba village in Mberengwa who was employed at Manyosi Mine in Gwanda had pleaded not guilty before magistrate, Arafat Kozanai but was however convicted.
He was fined $100 or in default 30 days imprisonment. Shoko had additional three months imprisonment suspended on condition of good behaviour.
A State witness, Eddington Hlongwane, told the court that a misunderstanding ensued between Shoko and Sibindi because of a memory card.
He said the memory card belonged to Sibindi.
“Sibindi came requesting for his memory card from Shoko. He then took Shoko’s cellphone stating that he would only return it after getting his card,” said Hlongwane.
The accused insisted on getting back his cellphone before he could give Sibindi the card, the court heard.
“During the fracas, Shoko picked a pick handle and assaulted the complainant. He continued assaulting the complainant until people who were nearby intervened,’’ Hlongwane added.
He said they managed to disarm Shoko before a report was made to the police.
