For most teens, Saturdays is the big “chill out” day, but one teenager has given “chilling” a new definition. Every Saturday, Godknows Ravhu leaves his home in Kuwadzana heading to City Bowling Club to train with his club.
All this training has paid off for this young man as at 16 he is the youngest player competing at the ongoing Zimbabwe October Fives tournament.
The tournament got underway this week and has attracted 15 teams including one from Thailand.
Although it is not on the curriculum at Mbare High School which he attends, Godknows has defied all odds by taking up lawn bowling as a sport.
“I was introduced to the sport by a friend late last year (2013) and I immediately fell in love,” says Godknows.
He was quickly thrown into the “lion’s den” when he took part at last year’s edition of October Fives and he admitted that he knew little about the game then.
His team performed poorly in that competition but that did not dampen his spirit.
“Although we came out number 13 out of 14, I was a winner in my own right because of the experience I got,” he says.
Top 5 is the ultimate aim that Godknows and his team, City Bowling Club has set for themselves.
His teammate and role model, Richard Mukucha says Godknows provides the club with the X-factor that other teams lack, and that is the youthfulness and excitement.
Godknows has no complains about playing with people twice his age or old enough to be his grandparents as he thinks it has helped him to be more respectful and to be able to communicate with people from different backgrounds.
He urges other teenagers especially from high density suburbs to take up the sport and see how enjoyable and interesting it is.
The form three student is determined to get to the top of the game.
“In the next five years I want to be regarded as one of the best players in the sport of lawn bowling as well as represent the nation.”
