A YOUTH-BASED organisation, Teen Rescue Mission (TRM), has bailed out scores of disadvantaged children through their Back-to-School Support initiative.
The support covers children from Grade 1 to Grade 7 and teenagers from Form 1 to Form 6.
TRM’s programme bailed out over 80 children and teenagers.
The organisation also donated stationery, including counter books, exercise books, plastic and khaki covers, sellotape, pens, rulers,and pencils and it is assisting some students with school fees.
Additionally, TRM’s Life Skills programme offered free scholarships to teenagers in rural areas.
In an interview, TRM director, Abraham Matuka, said:
“TRM has made it routine to support vulnerable children and teens during every back-to-school period.
“We have seen a rise in children dropping out of school due to lack of stationery, leading to increased drug and substance abuse, early pregnancy, and crime among young people.
“As an organisation, we are committed to fighting these causes through our projects.
“We managed to raise funds to assist our young people as they return to school, reducing the likelihood of them being driven astray.”
Beaty Mudawo, a single mother who attended the event, hailed TRM.
“We want to thank TRM for coming through to help us with stationery. January is always a difficult month, and as a single mother, I was helpless.
“Receiving this stationery has helped me focus on school fees.”
Fungisai Marowa, a 14-year-old girl in Form 2, also expressed her gratitude.
“I’m thankful to TRM for donating stationery.
“It’s difficult to attend school without the necessary materials. We thank TRM for rescuing us.”
