Dynamic teen hip hop artiste Crooger (pictured below) is set to shine bright at the Zim Hip Hop awards this coming December.
The 19-year-old has been nominated for three different categories namely best new comer, best album for “Road To Fame” and best album art for his creative cover done by Michael Riley.
Crooger was born Nyasha Gurure on 11 January 1994. He grew up in Chi-town and attended his primary school there. He then went to Gokomere High School for his Form 1 but transferred to Prince Edward in Form 2 where he stayed till he aced his A Levels.
“Growing up I was too clever for my age and an older cousin of mine used to call me a crook, from there it expanded to ‘Crooker’ and I decided to put more swag to it so I came up with Crooger.”
Inspired by Maskiri and Nasty Tricks, he found himself interested in the hip hop genre and started recording underground tracks with friends. In 2010 he took his interest more seriously and started recording professionally with Heshimfeshi till early this year when he changed stables to Rehab Entertainment.
While he is ecstatic just to be nominated he hopes to get at least one award out for the three that he is up for.
“Out of all the categories that I am nominated for, I am hopeful that I will win the best new comer award. I have put in a lot of work.
“Although I am the only one in my category who has a whole album, the other nominees just have singles the competition is tight and it would really be a great achievement to get it,” he said.
His album has 16 dynamic tracks which he says are bound to blow your mind.
His hottest hit track is called “Mabroke dudes” (Remix) and has a really cool beat, it features MMT a new hip hop group consisting of 3 popular hip hop artists; McCut, Mariachi and Tatea Da Mc.
The track produced by Mr Nobody has hit the Power FM Chart show and was number 8 this past week.
He is currently working with Schingy on a track titled “Marachets”. On his nominated album he worked with other popular producers, Xandr, Young Nash, Tash Nash, Nyasha Timbe and Benny B.
Apart from recording he also spends his time doing some boxing which he really enjoys as it also relieves the stress that comes from the pressure to always do the best for his fans.
Next year he plans to further his education at Midrand University in South Africa where he is going to study for a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
“To my fellow hip hop artists I say let’s stay united for the sake of the growth of our industry. And to those young people who may want to pursue the same path all I can say is keep it original, remember that you are Zimbabwean and not American so keep your culture alive.”
