KWEKWE HAS ERUPTED IN SHOCK! A chilling tale of betrayal and unimaginable depravity has rocked the Midlands province as a 19-year-old Kwekwe youth has been slapped with a life sentence for the brutal murder and subsequent sexual violation of his 41-year-old aunt.

The blood-curdling crime occurred on 27 January, 2023, at Plot Number 61, Maywood, leaving the quiet community reeling. Tapiwa Mereka, the cold-blooded killer, turned a family weeding chore into a scene of unspeakable horror.
The Bulawayo High Court, sitting in Gweru, heard how Mereka callously attacked his own flesh and blood, Mary Mereka, with a farm hoe as they toiled in their maize field. In a fit of savage violence, he rained down blows on her head, leaving her dead in the dusty field.

The court was told the stomach-churning detail of how the depraved teenager then sexually violated his aunt’s lifeless body before making off with her undergarments.
Mereka’s desperate attempt to evade justice saw him fleeing to the Sebakwe River, where he callously dumped the murder weapon into a thicket. However, his freedom was short-lived.

Justice Munamato Mutevedzi delivered a damning verdict, saying the attack was premeditated and fueled by a sickening lust. The judge highlighted the secluded nature of the field, where the pair were alone, and the damning evidence of the missing undergarments and the recovered hoe, all pointing to Mereka’s guilt.

Prosecutor Mr Talent Tadenyika painted a gruesome picture of the attack, revealing how Mereka first struck his aunt from behind before delivering fatal blows to her head. The victim bled profusely and died instantly, her body left abandoned in the field.
The horrifying discovery was made by a 67-year-old passer-by, Ms Winnie Murega, whose chance encounter led to the swift apprehension of the teenage killer.

Represented by Ms Samantha Chivivi, Mereka offered no defense against the overwhelming evidence. Justice has now been served, locking away this teenage monster for life, but the scars of his horrific crime will undoubtedly linger in the Kwekwe community for years to come.
