Telecel plans franchise roll-out

Brighton Gumbo Business Reporter
TELECEL Zimbabwe has unveiled plans to open new kiosks and engage additional dealers countrywide as part of a franchise roll-out programme aimed at consolidating the market share, chief executive officer Angeline Vere said. With more than two million subscribers, the mobile phone operator stands at third position and competes with NetOne, which has more than three million subscribers with Econet having about nine million.

“We intend to embark on franchise roll-out, kiosk roll-out and signing on of additional new dealers on the back of a revised commission system,” said Vere.

Following last week’s new super-voice bundle promotion launch, Vere said Telecel would launch the ‘Night Chat promo’ and the ‘073 4 Free Weekend promo’ before end of this month.

She pledged to ensure that Telecel fulfils its commitment to providing customers with high-tech mobile phone products and services at an affordable cost.

“I expect that we’ll continue to be the market leader in innovation in the telecoms market, highly respected by our customers, feared by our competitors, and loved by our stakeholders,” said Vere.

She said the mobile operator would continue to review its operating costs to maintain value offer for the subscribers.

“The works council has been exploring human resources cost containment measures. We’re happy to advise that Telecel has not reduced staff salaries at the moment but, like all organisations in this tough operating environment, is constantly looking for all available ways to optimise operating costs,” said Vere.

She said Telecel was fully committed to working with the government and complying with set regulations.

Telecel has managed to pay about $5 million licence instalment that was due for the month of June in line with its agreement with POTRAZ.

“We’re already preparing for the next instalment, which is due in December this year in accordance with our contract with the regulator and the government of Zimbabwe,” said Vere.
