TELECEL Zimbabwe says it targets to expand its telecommunications network in most rural areas in the Matabeleland region this year. In an interview, the mobile service operator’s regional manager for the southern region, Nelson Chipangamate, said they intend to continue expanding telecommunications network in the region’s remote areas and improve service delivery.
“We want to continue increasing our network to previously marginalised areas that had not enjoyed coverage. In the southern region, this year we are targeting to increase network coverage especially in Gwanda, Bulilima and Mangwe districts,” he said.
Chipangamate said in 2013 his organisation successfully managed to increase network coverage in remote places such as Binga that previously had no coverage.
“We have done some significant strides in making sure our services are available in the southern region. Recently we increased our network coverage in Binga, Colleen Bawn, Zezani in Beitbridge, Inkosikazi along the Victoria Falls highway and people can now communicate from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls as well as Bulawayo to Beitbridge,” he said.
He added that plans were in the pipeline to open more retail outlets in the southern region.
Telecel Zimbabwe has reportedly also expanded its network mainly targeting remote areas that had no coverage at all or where the service was less than satisfactory.
Some of the new areas where Telecel network coverage was accessed include Empress Mine, Gwesi, Main Line Turnoff, Mashava, Rukotso, Sengwa, Silobela, Sternmore, Troutberg, Tsholotsho, Bikita, Nyika, Zaka, Queens Mine, Dema and Zhombe.
Presently, Telecel Zimbabwe is the second largest mobile phone network in the country, with more than 2,5 million active subscribers.
