TELONE, the surprise package in this year’s championship race, is gearing up for a fierce battle against defending champions Simba Bhora at Wadzanai Stadium.
Under the astute leadership of head coach Herbert ‘Jompano’ Maruwa, TelOne has undergone a significant transformation, reinforcing its squad and showing promise after a strong resurgence that saw them avoid relegation last season.
At the heart of their attack is red-hot striker Washington Navaya, who has found the back of the net in each of the first four games, a lethal streak that signals TelOne’s intent.
“We are facing the defending champions, Simba, and we expect a very tough contest,” Maruwa told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
“We are coming off a win, while Simba are looking to bounce back from a defeat. They will be playing at home and will throw everything at us to recover.”
Maruwa stressed the importance of maintaining focus, warning against complacency despite their recent success. However, he believes the squad’s depth is one of their strongest assets.
“Yes, we won our last game, but this is a new challenge altogether. We have a well-balanced team with depth. Any player can step in and deliver, which gives us more tactical options,” he said.
TelOne currently sits third on the log with seven points, having suffered an opening-day defeat to Herentals before bouncing back with victories over Triangle and CAPS United.
Now, they aim to extend their winning run while simultaneously deepening Simba Bhora’s woes after the champions’ recent loss to Dynamos.
Maruwa remains calm despite the high stakes, acknowledging the constant pressure that comes with football.
“In football, there is always pressure, whether you are winning or losing. But mentally, I think the boys are ready for the defending champions,” he said.
As the showdown looms, TelOne will be looking to make a bold statement, while Simba Bhora fights to reaffirm their status as reigning champions.
