TelOne crowns technology graduates

THE TelOne Centre for Learning has been commended for consistently producing graduates who are in demand the world over. Speaking during a graduation ceremony at the centre recently, TelOne managing director Mrs Chipo Mtasa said the role that the centre was playing was critical given that the telecommunication sector is one of the fastest growing in the country and the world over.

“The ICT sector remains one of the fastest growing and dynamic sectors in Zimbabwe, and was selected as one of the pillars of economic development in the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation blueprint.

“We are therefore proud to be the cornerstone of this sector in terms of the provision of the requisite competencies that drive this growth,” said Mrs Mtasa.

She revealed that the centre was one of two institutions certified by SADC as a centre of excellence.

Mrs Mtasa said the centre will soon be offering a BSc Honours Degree in Telecommunications in collaboration with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) as it seeks to bolster its curriculum and become the premier ICT and telecommunications training institution.

In addition, TelOne has also managed to collaborate with Higher Education Examinations Council (HEXCO) in a bid to acquire full accreditation of the institution.

“We have managed to bring in up to 25 HEXCO courses to be added to our curriculum by the beginning of the year 2015,” says Mrs Mtasa.

Furthermore, TelOne acknowledged its contribution to the growth of the ICT industry as it has been vital in the bringing of traffic in the country so as to ensure the functionality of the telecoms industry.

It has been suggested that because of such ICT moves, mobile penetration rates have managed to grow up to 106 percent. This has led the ICT sector to contribute 15 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
