AN unrepentant Harare man, Soul Mubau (29), will have to spend 35 years behind bars for his temper tantrums.
He will probably be 64 by the time he tastes freedom again.
In a spectacular display of misplaced machismo, Mubau decided to use an iron bar to teach his 63-year-old father-in-law a lesson or two in child-rearing and welfare.
Apparently, Mubau was reportedly incensed that his children had not been to school for over a year because of his wife’s dad.
He, therefore, decided to unleash his fury on the hapless sexagenarian.
Mubau stormed his in-law’s compound in Chaitezvi village, Goromonzi, and punched the old man, knocking him to the ground, before strangling him while pinning him down with his knees.
For good measure, he then pounded the 63-year-old’s head with an iron bar.
The vicious assault left the victim with multiple fractures on his head, ribs and arm.
After the attack, Mubau fled the scene and returned to Harare. But after he was arrested and arraigned before the High Court, judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi did not buy his “concerned dad” act.
He was also clearly unimpressed by Mubau’s theatrics during trial after he blamed the heinous attack on a moment of temporary insanity. Justice Mutevedzi also found that Mubau lied to the court by claiming he acted in self-defence.
Furthermore, the judge emphasised the importance of respect in the African culture, especially towards one’s father-in-law.
Expressing his disapproval of violent crimes, Justice Mutevedzi added:
“It is for those reasons that we considered that the offender be and is hereby sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment.”
Well, Mubau risked it all, took a gamble and lost it all.
