Ten narrowly miss death

The accident occurred around 6.30 am.
The omnibus had 16 passengers heading towards Nelson Mandela Avenue, while the Ford Ranger was heading towards Seke Road.

National traffic acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza could not confirm the accident yesterday.

“We have not yet received any reports of the accident,” he said.
Meanwhile, witnesses told this paper both drivers failed to take precaution measures as they approached the intersection since there was fog in the morning.

“The accident occurred around 6.30am when a Chisipite-bound commuter omnibus was crossing Julius Nyerere Way heading towards Nelson Mandela when the Ford Ranger approached. I heard a screeching sound followed by a loud thud,” said Lovemore Chabvonga, an airtime vendor.

He said that both drivers were not cautious since they could not clearly see where they were going.
“Both drivers were wrong because they failed to slow down while approaching the intersection,” he said.

Another vendor, Aaron Zadura said that the accident was attributed to the malfunction of the robots.
“The robot was indicating that all cars could proceed and as a result the two drivers drove past and ended up clashing. The commuter omnibus was side swiped on the rear part and landed on its side injuring the occupants, with more than 10 of them seriously injured,” he said.
