Tertiary institutions urged to change curriculum

(SDERU) research officer and facilitator Mrs Virginia Kahonde on Thursday said that many students were failing to put theory into practice. She was addressing journalists at a three-day standard development workshop at the Management Training Bureau in Harare.
“The industry needs more practical work yet most university graduates are excellent in theory and poor in practice,” said Mrs Kahonde.
“Therefore, the purpose of this workshop is to convert words learnt at tertiary level into real practice in the industry.”
Mrs Kahonde said the workshop was meant to set unit standards on duties that a “complete journalist” should undertake.
The unit standards  will be of use to companies, trainees, employees and technical training institutions, according to the standards document.
Standards can be used for job evaluation and job grading and employees use them for salary negotiations.
