The court yesterday eased MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s officials, Thabani Mpofu and others’ bail conditions, who are being charged for allegedly possessing articles of criminal use. Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe yesterday removed the reporting conditions against Mpofu, Felix Matsinde, Mehluli Tshuma and Warship Dumba.
However, Mr Mahwe retained one bail condition, that of surrendering travel documents on the basis of safeguarding State’s fears that the four could abscond.
The quartet was arrested while compiling “dockets” which they are believed to have intended to use in investigating suspected corrupt government officials.
After the application by their lawyer Mr Chris Mhike to have the four removed from remand was dismissed, Mr Mahwe remanded them to March 28 next year.
The lengthy remand date was agreed upon by both the State and the defence to pave way for the determination of a constitutional application which was filed by the accused persons at the Constitutional Court.
Mpofu and Matsinde are former public prosecutors while their co-accused Tshuma is still with the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office but on suspension. The former PG officers charged alongside former councillor Dumba are alleged to have been found with dockets linked to investigations of the top government officials.
The Government officials include Prosecutor General Johannes Tomana, Jane Mutasa, Beauty Basile, Charles Muchemwa Nherera, former deputy minister Bright Matonga, Minister of Local Government, Ignatius Chombo, deputy PG, Florence Ziyambi, prosecutor, Michael Mugabe and area prosecutor, Jonathan Murombedzi.
They are facing charges of impersonating police and possession of articles of criminal use.
