CHINHOYI Afro jazz group, Grade 2D, finally wrote themselves into the Chibuku Road to Fame history.
After seven years of asking, the eight-member group were crowned winners of the 2022 finals at Glamis Arena in Harare on Saturday.
They beat nine other contestants drawn from the other country’s provinces.
For their efforts, the youthful Grade 2D group pocketed US$15 000.
Midlands ensemble, The Grooves Band, were the first runner-up and Shantani Music Group from Matabeleland North emerged third.
They took home US$10 000 and US$7 000 respectively.
In an interview with H-Metro, Grade 2D leader, Reginald Kamuchanyu, described their win as hard fought.
“It’s been a tough journey for us. Our lives literally revolved around the Chibuku Road to Fame, and winning it, after seven years of trying, is a great achievement for us.
“This means a lot to us and our fans back home in Chinhoyi.
“We celebrate this achievement together,” said Kamuchanyu.
In the seven previous editions, the band’s best placing was third.
Event organisers, Delta Corporation, said they were proud to be associated with nurturing more local talent.
“The entire Delta Corporation family remains committed to developing our local artists as part of our corporate social responsibility.
“We are happy that the event is back after a two-year sabbatical and hope to return again bigger and better next year,” said Delta Corporation marketing director, Irimayi Muzorewa.
The highlight of the event was the performances by top artists, Winky D, Ex Q, Tocky Vibes, Baba Harare and Mark Ngwazi at the after party.
The Gafa, as Winky D is affectionately known, was on top of his game, as always.
Baba Harare continued to scale new heights with his polished performance, which now includes Nyau dancers on his set.
