EXPLORING the upmarket suburb of Belvedere led me to a beautiful private residence where the art of gardening flourishes.
Careful planning and preparation culminate in a beautiful garden that expresses one’s interests.
This garden, meticulously maintained by the property owners’ gardener, Richmond Pangayi, who has worked on it for the past four years, serves as a cultural expression that will be enjoyed by anyone who visits the place.
Artistry in gardening combines nature and human creativity to fashion a visually appealing and enjoyable outdoor space.

This concept integrates principles from art and science, such as balance, unity, scale, contrast and colour, to create a landscape that rejuvenates the spirit.
Various elements, including plants of varying heights, water features, lighting and hardscaping, all contribute to crafting such a delightful outlook.
Plant selection stands as one of the most crucial aspects.
This involves the choice of plants that complement each other in terms of colour, shape and texture, thereby creating visual interest throughout the seasons.

Incorporating hardscape features such as walls, pathways and patios is essential to establishing structure and define spaces.
Creating focal points is important in drawing the eye and narrating a story that conveys a sense of purpose and inspiration.
There must be unity between the functional and practical spaces, alongside the need to create a visually appealing environment.
Artistry should be applied to develop diverse landscape designs, such as a calming hospital garden or a vibrant entertainment garden.

A serene garden benefits from the use of soft textures, calming colours and natural materials. On the other hand, a vibrant urban oasis thrives with bright colours.
When designing a garden, it is important to value ecological balance and resource conservation, prioritising native plants while ensuring their sustainable use.
A landscape design should not impose an overly demanding maintenance schedule. Given the constraints of the modern lifestyle, which may not allow for extensive gardening hours, achieving balance is key.
Furthermore, one must strive to create a landscape that harmonises with its surroundings.
For instance, in a savannah setting, incorporating various elements of the African landscape in the design would be appropriate.
