The art of garden harmony

Andrew Mangwarara

A SENSE of harmony will immediately strike you when you visit Munda Hotel, which was established in 2014 and is located 10 kilometres from the Bulawayo city centre.

A feeling of peace and tranquillity begins the moment you enter the grounds, a result of the carefully designed garden.

Harmony in garden design is the seamless integration of all elements to create a unified, visually pleasing space.

This involves careful consideration of colours, textures, forms and scale to ensure a cohesive and balanced composition that evokes a sense of peace.

To achieve this, you should focus on key principles that we shall discuss below:

  • Repeat certain elements like colours, textures or plant forms throughout the garden to create a sense of rhythm and visual connection.
  • All elements must work together to create a cohesive whole, avoiding a cluttered or chaotic appearance.
  • This can be achieved through either a symmetrical or an asymmetrical design.
  • Having similar items on either side of a central point contributes to the overall order and calmness of the garden.
  • Consider the size of plants, structures and other elements in relation to each other, and the overall space to ensure they harmonise.
  • Everything should be proportional to the whole garden.
  • Use analogous colours (those next to each other on the colour wheel) or a limited colour palette to create a sense of unity and visual calm.
  • Ensure smooth transitions between different areas of the garden to guide the eye through the space.
  • Avoid abrupt changes in the landscape by creating calm, gradual shifts.

By carefully considering these rules, you can create a garden that is not only beautiful but also tranquil, just as they have done at this particular hotel.

It will be an inviting space for relaxation and enjoyment.
