makes them a contributor to the green house gases effect and global warming?
That may be so, or not. Greenhouse gases occur naturally and help regulate global temperatures.
The problem now is that our atmosphere has taken too much of these gases than is needed.
Is this coming entirely from breathing?
Far from it, but the human factor is evident. Deforestation in developing countries continues to mercilessly eliminate trees needed to suck up carbon dioxide in its excesses.
On the other hand, industrial pollution and the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal are now the biggest contributor to carbon dioxide emissions.
The result has been global warming and climate change. World governments are looking for answers, they are looking them anywhere but from the word of God. It is time for the world to reform and rethink its strategies in fighting climate change.
We observe earthly events in the world today such as earthquakes, floods, etc and blame human actions. Fragile human solutions have been crafted and even proffered as long lasting.
This view is inadequate. Where is God in all this, omnipotent and omnipresent as he is?
To find a place for Him in the climate story, people must realise that God is the centre of everything even when mankind has been granted free reign over the earth and everything in it (Genesis 1:26).
The misery index amongst the people of the world is now at an all-time high on persistent frustrations because of lack of concrete answers to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Man’s over-reliance on scientific research and own wisdom has turned him blind to the age-old prophecies from the bible.
The book of Revelation is pregnant with predictions of the things that are happening in the world today.
Some of the prophecies have been happening over centuries and others are beginning or are about to begin. Revelation expects that the earth will experience a series of 14 catastrophic blows at the sound of the trumpet.
The bible prophesied that before the end of the world such things as earthquakes, floods, war and all the other drama seen in the world today will begin to happen, (Revelation 8:5, 11:13, Matthew 24:27-35).
We have already seen deadly tidal waves, earthquakes in coastal nations that have claimed more than half a million lives, (Asian Tsunami 2005 and Haiti 2010). Lives have also been lost through drinking of contaminated water (Zimbabwe cholera 2008). The world is facing serious challenges in the provision of safe and clean drinking water particularly in third world countries.
Violent volcanic eruptions (Iceland 2010 and Chile 2011) have disrupted air travel causing major financial losses for airlines and major economies.
All this is just part of the many prophecies contained in Revelation and the bible as a whole.
As important as human efforts are in tackling climate change, people must recognise that these changes are supernatural and can be dealt with by a similar force.
In his book “WARNING! REVELATION IS ABOUT TO BE FULFILLED” Larry W. Wilson states that:
“Do not be naive and think that things just happen because of the powers of human beings: Nothing happens in the universe without God’s knowledge and permission.
“Even though we are not able to see God in His throne we can know that He reigns over the kingdoms of man. God is sovereign. We may not see all that He is doing but the evidence is right before our eyes.” God is in control and in control of everything, climate change included (Job 18).
How He maintains control is mysterious. Below we will try to explore the forces of man and that of God and hope to understand that God remains in charge. As the late reggae singer Bob Marley put it “this could be the first trumpet, might as well be the last.” Climate change might be the sounding of the trumpet and as usual, the world, which is so used to blaming someone else for its problems might not hear it.
The Big Bang Theory: Man Vs God
Physicists believe that the universe started some 13,7 billion years ago. Before that nothing existed, they say – not time, space or energy – nothing.
The world was an empty infinitely hot, infinitely dense place, until from nowhere the universe came into being and started to expand and cool – the big bang.
They assert that the world started as a very small object that is now forever expanding and cooling making it possible for human habitation.
Physicists who usually have answers for everything say that they don’t know where the earth came from and why it came but are sure it had a beginning.
Why am I bringing up all this in the climate story? It would be critical in helping us trace the origin of the world both from man’s perspective and from a theological standpoint.
Through this knowledge we shall understand that solutions to climate change will come from many quarters, but what we need is a correct solution.
So what does theology say about the origins of the world? In Genesis 1:1 the Bible says in the beginning God created heaven and earth and the earth was void without form and darkness covered the face of the deep. So according to theology the earth has a beginning and an architect – it is the work of God. This is a departure from the big bang premise that the earth emerged from the blue and life only started when a small object emerged from nowhere nearly 14 billion years ago.
This explanation is insufficient and faulty. Where as the big bang asserts that time was finite, theology states otherwise, it has been in motion from ever since. Where science claims that the universe is infinitely expanding and cooling, what then is global warming?
Where does it come from when the world is meant to be cooling? Today world leaders and influential people are competing with nature in the face of climate change and the effects it has had on human life and settlement. They are cracking heads in negotiating the effects of climate change, a result of human actions over thousand of years, causing environmental degradation and ozone depletion.
But can we entirely trust man alone on this battle against the effects of climate change given the history of scientific research, which is open to constant errors and miscalculations?
Admitted and adopted, human kind has an active role to play in the climate war.
But while man is engaging man on the way forward, it will be foolhardy for him to keep the word of God in the periphery.
So as the world leaders sink their heads in search of solutions to climate change it is vitally important that they recognise the power of the word of God present in this age, ages before and ages to come.
As that same word predicts “As it was in the beginning so shall it be in the very end”, if both the big bang and the theological perspectives were to be observed, the world is therefore heading back to what it was 13,7 billion years ago-nothing and void.
God is faithful.
