Superstar Oliver Mtukudzi who has been touring southern Africa is set to grace The Centurion’s first anniversary gig scheduled for Thursday.
This would be his first gig since The Centurion, which is located at the Harare Sports Club, opened.
And what a great pleasure it is to watch Mtukudzi and his Black Spirits playing at the hangout synonymous with cricket and one of the favourite World Cup fan parks in the capital.
“We are celebrating one year since we opened doors as The Centurion. The gig is our own way to say thank you to all the patrons who supported us since the beginning.
“We want our regular patrons to come and enjoy the show with Tuku. There will be several treats on offer including our signature platters.
Booking is now open and there will not be tickets on the day of the show,” one of the organisers said.
As part of the entertainment, resident DJ Robert “Robbie Tee” Tichareva who rocked the joint from the beginning will also be there to support Mtukudzi.
Popularly known for his selection of R&B, hip-hop and soul, Robbie T is one of the best old skool DJs to come out of Harare.
However, The Black Spirits will perform as a trio on the night with Mtukudzi, or simply Tuku to his legion of fans, supported by Sam Mataure on drums and Enoch Piroro on bass guitar.
Tuku is one of the granddads of Zimbabwean music. His songs don not carry explicit political messages, but he makes it easy to read between the lines.
Far more than a musician, Tuku has been deeply involved in other art forms. He was featured in “JIT”, the first film with an all-Zimbabwean cast, and played a leading role in “Neria” a feature film for which he also wrote and arranged the soundtrack.
He also wrote and directed the musical “Was My Child”, a production exploring the plight of street children in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare. His recent short film was “Sarawoga”.
Lately, Tuku has been producing recordings by other Zimbabwean artistes from his Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton where he is also grooming young talents in several art disciplines.
