Wednesday, May 21, 1975 — South Africa was prepared to continue negotiations with the U.N. Secretary-General or his personal representative about the constitutional development of South West Africa, the Prime Minister, Mr. John Vorster, said here tonight. South African Government was also still willing to receive the personal envoy of the Secretary-General, Dr. Alfred Essher, or some other acceptable person to acquaint himself with the progress being made in the process of self-determination, reports lana.
Addressing the congress of the Afrikaanse Handeln instituut, the Prime Minister said it should, however, be clearly understood that South Africa was not prepared to accept United Nations’ supervision.
African leaders who were interested in visiting the territory to acquaint themselves with the circumstances there were very welcome to do so, either personally or by way of personal representatives, the Prime Minister said.
He was also willing to exchange views with a committee of the OAU, but he could not accept the proposed role of SWAPO as he had already most clearly stated.
If the African chairman of the South West Africa Committee and the Special Committee of the OAU, therefore, were really interested in discussing the progress of the nations of the territory with him in South Africa, he would also arrange for the true leaders of the nations of the territory to meet them. Furthermore, if they were anxious to receive the leaders of the various nations of South West Africa in their own countries to gain first-hand Information, they were free to invite them, and South Africa would do everything in its power to assist them to make such visits possible, the Prime Minister said.
