LONDON. — Top of the league, and they’re definitely having a laugh.
Despite losing twice in a week against Napoli and then Manchester City, Arsene Wenger felt that his side were still deserving of their annual Christmas party — on a fancy-dress party bus.
Arsenal, who host Chelsea on Monday in search of a 12th Premier League win of the season, were out enjoying themselves on the town — quite rightly — in the run-up to the festivities.
The Gunners’ party was held at the same time as north London rivals Tottenham were being dumped out of the Capital One Cup by West Ham at White Hart Lane.
Wojciech Szczesny posted a video on his Facebook channel of the club’s stars in fancy dress on a double-decker — surely it was the Wenger Bus (the title of a Vengaboys dance anthem, listen below). The Polish goalkeeper went as Robocop, Spanish ace Santi Cazorla dressed up as Super Mario, while Lukas Podolski fancies himself as The Hulk. Time off to relax from the 6-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium might not be the worst idea as they seek to get their title challenge back on track. Emmanuel Frimpong put on Mr T’s glad rags, with Per Mertesacker perhaps gave an indication as to how he sees himself at the Emirates after going as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. Full back Nacho Monreal dressed as a Ninja Turtle, with Ryo Miyaichi trussed up as Fred Flintstone.
Jack Wilshere appeared to go as Batman. And perhaps the most striking choice of costume came courtesy of Lukasz Fabianski, who opted for Robin. Are you watching, Mr Van Persie?
Christmas time hasn’t been all fun and games for Van Persie’s current club, Manchester United, so far.
David Moyes’ side lie eighth — 10 points behind the Gunners — after two high profile home defeats against Newcastle and Everton, which led to the manager cancelling the club’s planned pantomime.
It doesn’t appear to be much fun around Old Trafford at the moment. The tradition there was for Sir Alex Ferguson to serve soup in the kitchen ‘wearing a pinny’ before settling down to watch the panto. Youth players, meanwhile, would take the opportunity to jokingly mock the senior professionals over any interesting events which occurred during the season.
One youngster wore a Shrek mask and a curly wig in 2010 after Wayne Rooney had his hair transplant. But Moyes scrapped the event and instead opted to give a speech at a lunch.
No such problems at Arsenal though, who saw their party go off with a bang and it continued into the night at new West-End nightclub Libertine. — Mailonline.
