C.I.D 1-2 Magwegwe
THE Townsend Butcher-sponsored ZRP Bulawayo Province Inter-Stations Soccer League curtains finally came down this week.
The champions, Entumbane, who defended their title and ended the season unbeaten deserve a special mention.
They won 27 times and drew seven times, amassing a total of 88 points. Back to yesterday’s games, Magwegwe edged the Detectives in a tightly contested encounter 2-1. The match was played at Crescent Sports Ground. Magwegwe played for pride while the Detectives needed maximum points to finish second despite the outcome of the Bulawayo Central and PHQ game.
Straight from the first whistle, Brighton Sibanda almost scored as the fingertips by Liberty Ndlovu in goals for Magwegwe guided the ball and it rattled against the crossbar with Nickson Mukangaza clearing to safety.
It was indeed a see-saw affair with action swinging from one end to the other like a pendulum. Brighton Sibanda broke the hearts of Magwegwe faithfuls when he powered home the opener in the 17th minute after Magwegwe.
Benjamin Matavo could have ended the season with a goal but failed to connect a Methuseli Maphosa cross. Magwegwe drew level on the stroke of half time when Suffocate Sithole headed an Ashley Gahadza freekick.
However, the resumption of the second half saw Magwegwe shift a gear up in search of the winner. The winner would finally arrive on 52 minutes through Mhlengi Ndlovu.
In other games, Entumbane the already crowned 2024 champions ended the season without a defeat, the last casualties being Njube whom they beat 2-0.
Goals from the second most lethal striker in the league, Mgcini Mpofu and Frank Shumba were enough to send the most improved team Njube packing. Mgcini’s goal took his tally to 30.
Central had themselves to blame as they let go of the second position to CID by failing to beat the Administrators at Ross Camp.
Central scored through Professor Ndlovu with the Administrators’ goals coming through Wisdom Mashanda and Allen Mtengwa.
Mzilikazi demolished Khumalo 4-0 with golden boot winner Joseph Zimba, scoring a brace and Cosmas Malizani contributing as many in the 4-0 win.
At Zim Saints Sports Club, SauersPark edged Cowdray Park 1-0, Gabriel Mandityira scored the solitary goal, which saw the visitors losing their last three games.
At Crescent’s B Arena, Traffic got the better of visiting Tshabalala 2-1, Ronald Chivi and Jeremy Ndlovu scored for the home side with Tichaona Gwezuva netting the consolation goal.
