The green goddess…Joy Rukanza tells story of her trademark colour

JOYRUKANZA is a songstress who has made a name for herself in the music business.

She is a multi-award winning artiste who is known for her distinctive and consistent use of green colour in her art.

But what does green mean to her and how did it become her trademark?

Saturday Leisure spoke to the foreign-based creative who shared how green reflects her identity and vision.

“The green colour is a reflection of my artistic identity and a deliberate choice to stand out in the music industry. Lime green, to me, symbolises vibrancy, energy and a fresh perspective. It’s not just a colour; it’s a representation of my commitment to originality and innovation in my music and overall image.”

JoyRukanza said she developed a passion for green when she was in college, where she used to experiment with different and colourful hairstyles.

“During my college years, I developed a genuine love for sporting unique and colourful hairstyles, and would constantly experiment with different hairdos. Being able to do my own hair made this process particularly enjoyable and easy. In 2020, a friend of mine suggested I try a neon green hairstyle. Her recommendation was rooted in her expertise in colour theory and her understanding of what complements my dark skin tone. I was intrigued by the idea and decided to get some neon green braids which I loved. Since then, I have never gone back! I’ve wholeheartedly embraced the green aesthetic, not only in my hairstyles but also in shaping my overall branding.”

She said she chose green as a core element of her image because it aligns with her goal of making a memorable impact on people.

“Green is a colour that stands out, which aligns with my goal of making a memorable impact when meeting people. Neon green, in particular, embodies the vibrancy and uniqueness I want to convey. This choice has evolved my styling preferences. It started with experimenting with green hair and gradually extended to include green elements in my wardrobe, photoshoots, music videos and overall visual identity. My vision is to create a recognisable and cohesive brand that sets me apart in the competitive music industry. I want people, not only in Zimbabwe where I’m already known for my distinctive hair but across the globe, to associate lime green with my music and artistic expression, thereby creating a lasting connection between the colour and my brand.”

JoyRukanza said her dream is to become a powerful symbol in the industry, synonymous with innovation, creativity and authenticity.
“I am very much known for my unique and vibrant hairstyles in Zimbabwe, and I’m on a journey to become an internationally recognised figure. I aspire to paint the world green and expand my sphere of influence globally.

“I feel the objectives are working and it has become a talking point, generating interest and curiosity among fans and the media alike. Each time someone sees me or talks to me, they are always curious about my hair and often ask what inspired me to have such funky and cool hairstyles. It has helped to create a consistent and memorable image, making it easier for people to recognise and remember my work.

“Beyond the visual aspect, it aligns with the themes in my music. I love singing about growth, positivity, new energy and moving on from toxic situations and I think that green is the perfect colour to symbolise those themes. It’s been quite interesting however to see that some artistes in our city are picking a leaf from my book and incorporating distinctive colours into their own branding,” she said.

“While imitation is a form of flattery, I believe it’s crucial for artistes to go beyond mere replication by seeking authenticity and finding something that works uniquely for them. It’s not just about the colour but about expressing individuality and creating a brand that resonates with your personal style and artistic vision,” said JoyRukanza. –@mthabisi_mthire
