Today, Zimbabwe once again pauses to commemorate Heroes Day, a sacred occasion that reminds us of the immeasurable sacrifices made by the brave sons and daughters of this land who laid down their lives so that future generations could live in freedom.
Under this year’s fitting theme, “Lest We Forget”, the nation is called upon to remember that the independence we enjoy today was not freely given. It was won through courage, sacrifice, resilience and an unwavering belief that Zimbabwe belonged to its people.
The liberation struggle was fought by ordinary men and women, who answered an extraordinary calling. Many left behind families, careers, education and the comforts of home to endure unimaginable hardship in pursuit of one dream — a free and independent Zimbabwe.
Countless others never returned home, making the ultimate sacrifice so that the Zimbabwean flag could one day fly proudly over a sovereign nation.
Their heroism was not measured by personal gain but by selfless service. They fought not for themselves, but for generations they would never meet. Today Zimbabweans are beneficiaries of that priceless sacrifice.
As we honour our liberation heroes, we must also acknowledge another generation of heroes whose contributions have shaped Zimbabwe since Independence in 1980. While they did not carry rifles into battle, they have fought different battles — battles against poverty, disease, illiteracy, underdevelopment and economic adversity.
These are the teachers who have educated millions of Zimbabwean children and opened doors of opportunity through knowledge. They are the nurses, doctors and healthcare workers who have tirelessly cared for communities during times of crisis. They are the farmers who have continued producing food despite difficult seasons, ensuring the nation remains fed.
They are the engineers, builders, entrepreneurs, miners, scientists, researchers and industrialists, whose innovations have kept Zimbabwe moving forward. They are the civil servants who have served with dedication, the artists who have preserved our culture, the athletes who have proudly flown the Zimbabwean flag on international stages, and the countless community leaders and volunteers whose daily acts of service often go unnoticed.
Every bridge constructed, every school built, every business established, every scientific breakthrough achieved and every young life positively transformed represents another chapter in the continuing story of nation-building.
Heroes are not only remembered in monuments and history books. Heroes are also found in classrooms, hospitals, factories, farms, laboratories, workshops, offices and communities across Zimbabwe. They are ordinary citizens performing extraordinary acts of commitment every single day.
Yet the greatest tribute we can pay to both our liberation heroes and our nation-building heroes is not merely through speeches or ceremonies. It is by ensuring that future generations continue the work they began.
The baton is now firmly in the hands of Zimbabwe’s young people. Today’s youths are the heroes of tomorrow.
Their battlefield is different. Their weapons are education, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, discipline, integrity and hard work. They are being called upon to solve problems through creativity, create employment through enterprise, improve agriculture through science, modernise industry through technology and build globally competitive businesses that can drive Zimbabwe’s economic transformation.
Every successful entrepreneur who creates jobs becomes a national builder. Every young engineer who develops new solutions strengthens the country’s future. Every software developer creating digital innovations, every researcher making scientific discoveries, every farmer embracing modern agricultural methods and every skilled artisan producing quality work is contributing to Zimbabwe’s progress.
The future will not be built by chance. It will be built by young Zimbabweans who choose excellence over mediocrity, productivity over complacency and innovation over excuses. Just as the President Mnangagwa’s philosophy goes, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”.
History teaches us that every generation has its defining assignment.
The liberation generation fought for political freedom. The generation that followed worked to establish institutions, educate the nation and expand social and economic opportunities. The current generation has perhaps the greatest responsibility of all: transforming Zimbabwe into a modern, prosperous, innovative and globally competitive economy in line with Vision 2030.
This demands citizens who are patriotic, ethical, hardworking and prepared to make sacrifices for the common good. Great nations are not built by spectators, but by active participants, who recognise that national development begins with individual responsibility.
Heroes’ Day should, therefore, inspire every Zimbabwean to ask a simple but profound question: What contribution will I make to my country?
Heroism is not reserved for a select few. Every citizen has an opportunity to leave Zimbabwe better than they found it.
The learner who studies diligently today may become tomorrow’s leading scientist. The young entrepreneur starting with a small business today could one day employ thousands. The inventor working quietly in a workshop may create technologies that transform industries. The public servant who chooses honesty over corruption strengthens national institutions. The community volunteer who helps vulnerable families builds stronger and more compassionate communities.
This is how nations rise.
As Zimbabwe remembers those who paid the ultimate price for freedom, let us also celebrate those who continue building the nation through their daily contributions. Above all, let us encourage today’s youths to embrace their responsibility with confidence and determination.
The torch has been passed. The responsibility now rests with this generation to write the next chapter of Zimbabwe’s story — a chapter defined by innovation, productivity, unity, peace and shared prosperity.
The heroes of yesterday secured our freedom. The heroes of today are building our future. And the heroes of tomorrow are already among us.
May they carry the baton with courage, wisdom and an unshakable commitment to ensuring that Zimbabwe reaches even greater heights for generations to come.
