The lawyer with the jazz touch

While most people with a law degree would be happy to settle down and reap the benefits of their qualifications, 33-year-old Wellington Davira is a lawyer with a difference.

While he holds an LLB from the Midlands State University (MSU), Davira prefers to not only fight his battles in the courtroom, but also in the recording booth as a jazz practitioner.

For the past few years, beginning with his debut album in 2014 Davira, known in jazz circles as Jazzy Jazz, has been fighting the injustice that he sees around the world with a marriage of educational lyrics, the guitar and mbira.

A self-proclaimed-born-musician, it took Jazzy Jazz more than 18 years to realise his talent and it took him four more years to start taking music seriously. He then started recording as an RanaB artiste at Shades of Life Ent in his hometown Masvingo.

a?From the onset I always wanted to be a musician. I remember when I applied for a place to study law at MSU my second option was music. Iave always had an undying love for music and throughout my studies in university Iad reserve time for music. Actually most songs on this album were recorded while I was still a law student,a? said Jazzy Jazz.

His journey began in earnest at the University of Zimbabwe in 2004 when he was spotted by Shape Zimbabwe and recorded a song entitled Samantha.

However, he suffered the heartbreak experienced by many music upstarts as the song never saw the light of day.

In 2014, with the release of his eight-track debut, Jazzy Jazz seemed to be on his way again despite the setbacks and three years later the lawyer-cum-musician is now back to take another crack at superstardom.

The lawyer who practices at Dzimba, Jaravaza and Associates, this week released his single Pavanofamba, which is the prelude to a December album release.

a?I waited patiently to get recognition for my first effort but I feel like itas time that I release another joint. This current single will be followed by another in October before I roll out my album in December,a? he said.
