The mind of Christ is one of prayer

Faith Moves Mountains with Pauline Matanda

“When He (Jesus Christ) came to the place, He said to them, ‘Pray that you will not fall into temptation.’

He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed. In His anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. When He rose from prayer and returned to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from grief.” — Luke 22:40-41, 44-45

In the face of temptation, Jesus instructs His disciples: “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”

When He Himself is overwhelmed with anguish, He kneels and prays. This demonstrates the power and necessity of prayer in times of deep need. Jesus understood the vital role of prayer in resisting temptation.

He warned His disciples of its dangers and urged them to seek strength and guidance through communion with God.

As we navigate our own trials and temptations, we, too, must turn to God in prayer, seeking His wisdom, protection and peace.

In His moment of greatest sorrow, Jesus prayed with such intensity that His sweat became like drops of blood. (Luke 22:44)This reveals the mind of Christ. It is a mind that seeks God’s presence and power even in suffering. We are invited to follow His example, turning to prayer as a source of strength and comfort in our own times of pain.

When Jesus returned, He found His disciples asleep — exhausted from grief.

Their inability to stay awake and pray stands in stark contrast to His own prayerful posture.

This moment reminds us that prayer requires effort, discipline and intentionality.

We must prioritise it, even when it feels difficult or inconvenient. As 1 Corinthians 2:16 reminds us, “For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

The mind of Christ is one of prayer. It is one that seeks God’s presence and power in every circumstance.

May we learn from Jesus’ example and cultivate a deeper, more intentional prayer life. As you reflect on this message, ask yourself:

Are you prioritising prayer in your life?

Do you turn to God in moments of temptation and anguish?

Are you seeking His presence and power in all circumstances?

May we strive to cultivate the mind of Christ — a mind of prayer that seeks God’s guidance and strength in every aspect of our lives.

Prayer

Lord, give us the mind of Christ — a mind that seeks Your presence and power in all circumstances. Help us to prioritise prayer in our lives and to turn to You in times of temptation and anguish. May we be transformed by Your guidance and reflect Your love and compassion to a world in need. Amen!
