Aged 18, Swayz possesses brains and a golden voice that makes people to stop and think. In spite of his short career, Swayz is getting better with age like wine. His music has become a hit among his teens at school and home.
Hailing from the leafy suburb of Newlands in Harare, Swayz says the internet has helped him achieve much success.
“I use the internet for distribution since printing compact discs is difficult for a student like me,” he said.
After school, the rapper intends to venture into Interactive Multimedia and design.
No matter how good he is in music, the soft-spoken Swayz has no plans to take music full-timel since he regards it as a hobby.
The name “Swayz” emanated during his primary school days at Eaglesvale School, when a photographer with the school’s magazine mistakenly captioned his name as “Swaze” instead of Gwaze.
“When it was published, one of my friends read it as “Swayz” and from that day I fell in love with the name,” he said.
He started rapping at the age of 15, his friend, Hermen Machava, encouraged him to sing and from then on Swayz never looked back.
“I did my first recording with L Mega, a local producer in my neighbourhood, and released my first single ‘Reason to Hate’. It received overwhelming response from my schoolmates and I decided to record more songs,” he said.
As he grew older, so did his fan base and this earned him a recording deal with one of the leading producers in the country, Xndr. The most noticeable feature on Swayz’s music is his ability to use punch-lines popularly referred to as metaphors which relate to his fans.
His first mixtape titled “Kill Beats Get Money”, released in April 2012 was a huge success. Meanwhile, he is set to release another mixtape sometime in July to coincide with his birthday titled “Young and Underestimated”.
“I decided to name it that way since people are looking down upon me because I am young, but a message to all is that the project is going to show them that I am the future and the next generation of hip-hop,” he boasted.
The mixtape features some of the country’s recognised talents in the form of Tatea Da Mc, Xndr, Youngnash and many more.
Drawing his inspiration from international artistes like Tyga and Big Sean, the talented star is set to take Zim hip-hop to international standards.
Given time, Swayz is determined to change the face of hip-hop in the country and prove to be the force to reckon with in the genre.
